The sound that plays when a new email arrives, desktop notifications and the approval request sound can be turned off independently of each other. Who can do this: Each user sets their own preference. The notification type you turn off now passes silently; the email still appears in the list, in the notification centre and in counters. The notification type you turn off continues to appear in the email list; only its sound or desktop notification is silenced.

Steps

  1. From the My account menu in the top right, open Appearance.

  2. In the Notifications section, clear the option you do not want: Play sound when new email arrives 1, Show desktop notification when new email arrives or Play sound when approval request arrives 2. The change is saved immediately.

ResultThe notification type you turn off will from now on pass silently; the email still appears in the list, notification centre and counters.
TipDesktop notifications also depend on your browser's own notification permission; if the browser has not granted permission, notifications will not appear even if you turn on this option.
TipThe preference is stored in this browser; you need to set it separately on another device or browser.
