Setting dependencies between tasks

You indicate that one task depends on another by dragging in the Gantt diagram or using Add Predecessor in the task panel. There are four dependency types and working-day delays.

  • Project manager
  • Project Member

How to create dependencies between tasks?

You indicate that one task depends on another by dragging it on the Gantt chart or using 'Add Predecessor' in the task panel. Who can do this: Project Manager; Project Member. Four dependency types and lag (working days) are supported. Circular dependencies are not accepted (e.g., A→B→A); the warning "This dependency creates a cycle" will appear.

By dragging in the diagram

  1. Hover over the predecessor task's bar; a small dot will appear at its right end.

  2. Hold the dot and drag it to the successor task's bar, then release.

From the task panel

  1. Open the successor task's panel.

  2. Click Add Predecessor in the Dependencies section, or Dependency in the right column if the section is missing 1.

  3. Select the predecessor task, dependency type, and Lag value if needed (working days; negative values start before the predecessor finishes), then click Link.

Dependency types

  • Finish-to-Start: the successor starts when the predecessor finishes (most common).
  • Start-to-Start: the successor can start when the predecessor starts.
  • Finish-to-Finish: the successor cannot finish until the predecessor finishes.
  • Start-to-Finish: the successor cannot finish until the predecessor starts.
Note Circular dependencies are not accepted (e.g., A→B→A); the warning "This dependency creates a cycle" will appear.
Tip Negative lag allows the successor to start before the predecessor finishes. Clicking an arrow on the chart opens the dependency details and the 'Remove Dependency' button.

Changing a dependency and bringing tasks closer

  • Click the arrow between two cards on the Gantt chart; use the top banner to change the dependency type (Finish-to-Start, Start-to-Start, Finish-to-Finish, Start-to-Finish) and lag (working days).

  • If you drag a card before its predecessor, the dependency pushes it back and displays a notification explaining why. If two tasks must run simultaneously, set the dependency to 'Start-to-Start' or make the lag negative (e.g., -2: starts 2 working days before the predecessor finishes).

  • Weekends are not working days: a task finishing on Friday will have its successor start on Monday; the grey columns between bars represent weekends.
